And I feel it's a long way down.... - In a movie so crass & awkwardly cast, even I could be the star

Right-o. Humour is indeed highly subjective. I'd venture to say that the "purest" (albeit dark) comedy that was close to winning in recent years was Pulp Fiction. Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine had comedic bits, but both were rife with The Sorrow. And The Pity.

Thoughts?

Now that you mention it, it hasn't exactly been easy to get a comedy NOMINATED for BP.

Little Miss Sunshine. That maybe should have won. It certainly had one of the funniest and at the same time most touching uses of Rick James' music in history.

Did you ever see "This Film Has Not Yet Rated?" There's a mindblower.

Little Miss Sunshine! Of course. It was staring me right in the face (and not just because I was a dead ringer for Olive as a preteen; others have attested to this). I really enjoyed that one but thought it an odd contender for Best Picture, because the uniformly awesome acting, the humour, and its poignancy redeemed a highly entertaining and madcap but often problematic plot.

I've never seen the film you mentioned. It's a documentary, right?
